BE INTERNET BRAVE
Speaking up
Having conversations about online safety helps make all of us Internet Legends!
Let’s talk!
Internet safety is everyone’s responsibility and talking about it makes us all more comfortable and more equipped to deal with the online world.
1 Encourage children to ask questions whenever they want, about whatever topic they want.
2 Show interest in the apps and sites your children use the most and ask for a tour. Find out how they use them and what they like about them.
3 Set clear family rules and expectations around technology and let children know these may change as they get older.

Keep reminding children that they can talk to you about anything they see, or experience, online. Knowing what kinds of questions you might be asked will help you prepare for these conversations.
Some of the most common topics that come up are:
They’ve shared their password with a friend and now suspect that their account may have been compromised. What should they do?
They need help remembering a password.
They’re unsure whether something is a scam, or suspect they might have fallen for a phishing attack. What steps should they follow to make sure they’re safe?
Someone has tried to discuss something with them that makes them uncomfortable. How should they respond?
They’ve received suspicious messages from a stranger. What should they do?
They’ve seen something that upsets them online. How should they react?
They are concerned that they may have shared something online that they should not have.
Someone has been mean to them online and they’re unsure of what to do.
A friend is being bullied online and they don’t know what they can do to help.
They think their friends are behaving inappropriately online and they want to discuss acts of kindness and unkindness.
Activity
Ask your child to make a list of three people they trust, so they always know who to turn to for advice. It can include teachers, relatives, family friends, and even their peers.
Keep the list somewhere visible to remind everyone to check in regularly.
