BE INTERNET SECURE
Keeping your information safe

Personal privacy and security are as important online as they are in the real world. Make sure children know how to make sure their valuable information stays protected.

Making powerful passwords

Strong passwords help keep important information locked up safe online and prevent others from accessing your personal accounts.

Activity

Try crafting some powerful passwords together by following these steps:

1 Start with something unique — like a favourite song lyric, book title, film or catchphrase

2 Use at least eight characters

3 Use a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters

4 Replace some of the letters with symbols and numbers

Password donʼts

When thinking up new passwords, itʼs a good idea to remind children of a few things NOT to do...

Donʼt use any personal details, like names, birthdays or phone numbers

Donʼt make them easy for people to guess e.g. 123456, or ‘password’

Donʼt use the same one on different sites

Donʼt share them with anyone

Donʼt forget to change them regularly — switch it up every 6 months

Donʼt forget to make them memorable!

Controlling your settings

Decide what’s right for you and your family by taking control of your privacy and security settings. Most websites and apps will have them under the ‘My Account’ or ‘Settings’ option.

From here, you can adjust things like:

What information is visible on your profile.

Who can view your posts, photos, videos, or other content that you share.

What content you see when you visit.

Checking these are up to date will help keep you safe and make your online experiences better.

Quick lessons for little ones...

A strong password is a safe password

Passwords should be kept a secret from everyone except parents or guardians

If you write your password down, keep it safely hidden
